The 3 Day Assault is a better large backpack than either size GR2 with only the very rare exception, but the GR2 still is great and has a place in my heart. Its definitely one of the companys most popular packs amongst both the military members and EDC Gurus in our community. First things first, the GR2 comes in three sizes, but the smallest size, the 26L, is not one I am writing about at all. The 3 Day measures at 22 tall but if you leave the top area empty you can drop that down under 20 depending on how tall you have the yoke set to. A nice feature for sure, but I found very limited use of this webbing. I think the 3 Day looks less tactical and thus better, and I think it wears much better overall. The exterior of the bag has side PALS webbing which provides (much needed, in my opinion) lash-on expansion to carry capacity. Ive never even been tempted to use mine that way. We challenged our design team with developing a lighter weight (without sacrificing durability) and different access options in a new line of assault pack offerings suited for mission-essential or daily-driver gear. It can also be used for longer items that protrude like radio antennas. This pack has ample areas to carry hydration bladders or bottles. For me, this change in mindset started when I began cataloging some pictures of bags on my back for a member-only section. Cost The 3 Day Assault CL pack has a retail price of $375.00. This pack is about the most comfortable tactical backpack one can find, but in comparison to hiking pack brands, one can notice some obvious ergonomic flaws. and can be accessed from the side or from inside the main compartment. I found there to be a nice addition and I appreciate that Mystery Ranch didnt cover the entire face of the pack with them as they would have been overkill. Click to play video. They both do have laptop sleeves, and they both have great laptop sleeves at that. Its very easy to neatly pack your clothing in it regardless of whether you use packing cubes. Very well made fits and carries great. We use cookies to ensure that we give you the best experience on our website. Forced to pick between the two, the 3 Day Assault CL works better for EDC simply because the compression straps can push the size of the bag down a lot farther than even compression straps on the GR2 can manage. Not much to report here except they have an elastic band around the opening to keep them closed when on tit use. Re: Mystery Ranch - 3 day assault pack - thoughts? The 3 Day: you set the back on the front, and access the two top zippers, or try to set it on the bottom to get at the main area via the top lid. Whether you are hunting, bird-watching, orienteering, conducting a 2-3 day reconnaissance patrol, or just backpacking in the Appalachians, Mystery Ranchs 3 Day Assault CL wont do you wrong. And if Reddit posts are any indication, not many take the GR2s out hiking (though the Bullets and GR1/Ruckers are often taken out) unless they are the smaller 26L models. Not much to report here except they have an elastic band around the opening so to keep them closed when not in use. Think of them as an open stuff sack sewn into the wall of the pack. A previous winner of our Best Active Backpack, the 3DAP is something we've dug for years now. We also use third-party cookies that help us analyze and understand how you use this website. The longer shoulder straps made it much easier to take on and off. 3:53 . I dont like water bottles pockets as a general rule, but when I am hiking they can be a huge help (usually to store water for my kids) and thats where the 3 Day Assault shines. The Three Day Assault Pack is definitely one of the companys most popular packs amongst both the military members and EDC Gurus in the community. For 400$ you should want for nothing ! See each listing for international shipping options and costs. Fitting your Pack. This is an area where the 3DAP outshines most of its competition. That being said its still a noteworthy feature. But the 3 Day wears a lot easier in crowds than the GR2. Its signature 3-Zip design provides ready access to the pack's contents. Right down to the YKK zippers with nylon cordage wrapped through the pull tabs and hot knifed to avoid unraveling. 0:48 . Its very user friendly. Which means they carry very heavy loads exceptionally well. The 2-DAY is MYSTERY RANCH's nod to the ultra-success of the 3-Day Assault Pack. 3 DAY ASSAULT CL Mystery Ranch Review by Big Fred. I also highly recommend MR put a zipper or velcro pocket where the plastic back panel is so that the user can quickly change out this panel for one that has aluminum or composite stays. The GR2s have large flat surfaces across you back at the full width whereas the 3 Day has a smaller contact area to your back and then starts moving away from your body in an oval-ish shape. Quality went down but price went up. None of the straps came with a tie-down to stow the excess, wish MR had some velcro . The sternum strap is adjustable and in a great location although it has no keeper for the extra strap you will have hanging off of it once you adjust it for your chest. This helps to stabilize the load in the pack. I also have a 2016 Philippine made Sweet Pea whose straps are MUCH more substantial. There is nothing worse than fishing for a small item on the bottom of a top-loader pack. Contribute. I've had the bag for a couple weeks now and I'm satisfied with it overall. All opinions are my own and are based off my personal experience with the product. I carried it for over 8 years all over the world. If you are not, then the GR2 will feel much easier to deal with clothing in. You can add some of this to the GR2, but each one will cost you extra money (compression straps are a custom add on and are $30 per set plus shipping to GORUCK; sternum strap is $15, hip belts are harder to get from GORUCK). I received this product as a courtesy from the manufacturer via Spotter Up so I could test it and give my honest feedback. This means that you get something closer to 6.75 in depth for the main compartment in the GR2 to store stuff, and another thinner pocket for more organization. I bought extra velcro for strap rention to make things look neat . These cookies will be stored in your browser only with your consent. We've taken the classic design of the 3 DAY ASSAULT and streamlined the exterior by removing and updating features, making it the best pack for versatility and mobility. Once you dawn on the 3DAP for the first time, its no wonder why so many military groups choose this pack. Free returns. But opting out of some of these cookies may affect your browsing experience. They are tall 500 D pockets that are perfect for placing a water bottle or extra layer into. About The Perfect Pack This should give you access to the bottom without everything falling out. The manufacturing listed on the tag says 2008 so take this review with a pinch of salt as some materials and features may have been changed and improved upon since this bag was made. If the price were lower I'd rate it a couple stars higher. Thanks for subscribing. But the 3 Day is not, its more rounded. . This never happens with my ASAP or earlier 3 Day Assault. In this video, I take a look at the Mystery Ranch 3-Day Assault Pack. Very comfortable padded shoulder straps with adjustable harness, Well suited to carry large tripods or firearms, Pricy, But this kind of quality doesnt come cheap, Mis-Marketed, not big enough for 72 hours of sustainment in my opinion. The accessibility and size of the pack is fantastic. This material is absolutely bomber. Weaving in between the daisy chains is two horizontal compression straps to minimize bulk when not fully loaded or to be used to stabilize larger and or longer items on the site of the pack. You carry boxy gear and need to hold square shapes. Thanks for watching.. The mesh padding on the back and shoulder straps is starting to pill a little already, but I guess that's to be expected. If anyone reading this review notes clear differences on their newer 3DAP, please comment below, Id like to know what has changed in the design in the last 12 years. Thats not to say it doesnt feel wide or deep, but not nearly to the extent as the GR2s do. Great zipper design. There is also a smaller zip close pocket to carry smaller items such as wallets or medication which is mounted on top of the main flap. At first, I thought it was a place to fix a large radio system but Im sure that you could use it for for holding a rifle. I wish more packs included a simple system like this on their larger bags. I like all the pockets and accessibility it has. You are wanting to travel and know you are going to be wearing the bag a good amount moving around (more than using it stationary in a place). Other items can be carried in this pocket if one doesnt wish to use it for water. ULTIMATE BUYER'S GUIDE THE WORLD'S BEST BACKPACKS CURATED IN ONE SPOT. 3 Day Assault BVS 6500 ASAP . The only issue with the 3 Day Assault is that it requires time invested in adjusting it properly to fit your body, but once done you are off to the races. Sometimes when I am carrying 20-30 lbs the padding on the new black 3 Day Assault flattens fully and I can feel the liner that maintains the form of the strap. Moving down we have two side water bottle pockets with drain holes. With light-to-medium loads this pack honestly feels like its floating on my back, when properly adjusted, and thats something I cant say about many other bags on the market. Wearing the pack requires some time initially to get everything just right. Load-lifter straps on the top bring the bag closer or further from the shoulders with waist-belt adjustments to more evenly distribute the load of the bag onto the hips. With the 3 Day Assault you get the bag adjusted just right, and it holds a light load as well as it does a lot of weight (Ive run mine up to 40lbs). In my experience, most military-focused bags sacrifice comfort over functionality, and there is nothing wrong with that, but when youre going to have 45 pounds on your back for an entire day, it pays to have something a little more comfortable. I used these to support my tripod, to good effect, with the compression straps stabilizing the long item on the side of the pack. Advantages of the Mystery Ranch 3 Day Assault Backpack The number of positive reviews for the 3 Day Assault Pack is more than enough reassurance that this bag is the real deal, but here are 3 major reasons why you might want to buy one yourself. You want one of the best all around backpacks you can buy to live your life with. Out of these, the cookies that are categorized as necessary are stored on your browser as they are essential for the working of basic functionalities of the website. In the days of Special Operations work with full mission rucks that carried everything we needed for multiple day patrols. I do get that this pack can be worn with other gear and the long straps are possibly necessary. For example:My black 3 Day Assault has much thinner shoulder padding than my Camo 3 Day Assault or my ASAP. The bottom shoulder straps an pretty long and have the ability to get in the way and tangled etc. Sign up for the MYSTERY RANCH email newsletter and receive exclusive access to new packs, special deals, and updates from the Ranch. Links: Instagram: http://instagram.com/jtinseoulBlog: http://jtinseoul.com After removing the weight from the PALS webbing I was amazed to see that the stitching was fulling intact with no frays.
